The Maserati Indy

Maserati followed up its stunning, Ghia-styled Ghibli two-seater with the equally elegant Indy 2+2, though the latter, announced in 1968 and noteworthy as the first unitary construction Maserati, was the work of Carrozzeria Vignale. The Indy first appeared publicly on Vignale’s stand at the 1968 Turin Motor Show and was officially launched by Maserati at the Geneva Salon in 1969. Running gear was conventional, with independent front suspension, live rear axle and four-wheel disc brakes, while the power unit was – initially – the Modena firm’s well-tried, 4.1-litre, four-cam V8, with 4.7- and 4.9-litre versions following. A ZF five-speed manual gearbox was standard, with a three-speed Borg Warner automatic available to special order. With 260bhp on tap, the top speed of Maserati’s luxury four-seater was in the region of 150mph (240km/h), a figure the subsequent larger-engined versions improved upon. The sleek Vignale coachwork was so effective that the Indy was able to carry four people in relative comfort without impairing its performance as a sports car.

This Motorcar

The Maserati Indy which we are offering here is chassis AM116/47 1016. The car is a European model supplied new for the Swiss market, its first registration is from April 1971. The original colour combination was Verde Acrilico with tan leather interior, a colour combination which the car still retains today, as well as its original engine! The first owner kept the car until 2005, which means no less than 34 years! The car was subsequently sold to its current and second owner in Germany. The history of the car is crystal clear.
Very well taken care of, the car shows a mere 44,000 original km on the clock. However, and in order to ensure an optimal use, the actual owner has had the full mechanical entirely overhauls by one of the most respected Maserati specialists in Germany, totaling approximately EUR 50.000,- of records (included in the file). At the same time the car did receive a respray in the original colour.
All instruments are in perfect working order, the interior – unrestored – is in a stunning state of preservation. The floor mats are also the original ones. The car comes with the original Maserati Autovox radio, owner’s manual, period photographs. Very user friendly, the car is a delight at the wheel and undoubtedly represents today the finest Maserati Indy available on the market. Fresh with a service including re-charge of the A/C performed in June 2023, the car is ready for enjoyment.
AM116/47 1016 offers everything a discerning collector would be looking for in a classic car.
